24 Doors of Merchants’ – Day 18

Door 18 is one of our more intriguing doors – it leads from the office on the left as you enter the Clock Tower building, right up to the top of the tower.

We are often asked to take people for a tour inside the Clock Tower itself – sadly the access is not safe enough for regular visitors. But we did sneak in there with our photographer a few years ago a captured these brilliant images showing the way up and the view from the top. There is lots of graffiti from years gone by, at a time when it was common for boys to leave their mark before they left the school.

We have also heard some fascinating stories about various uses for the Clock Tower rooms over the years – including as storage for Home Guard guns during World War 2 – presumably because it provides such a good vantage point!
