Merchants Gives

Merchants Gives is a 36 hour digitally driven event with the goal of rallying the Merchant Taylors’ community behind our bursary campaign.

It will take place from 8am on Wednesday 16 June until 8pm on Thursday 17 June 2021, and will consist of a range of challenges, videos, and interaction right across the Merchants community.  Look out for some brilliant new video content, unseen archive materials, special appearances from former staff, and pupils undertaking challenges to celebrate our 401st anniversary!

We’ll be raising money for our bursary campaign, and specifically for transformational bursaries, those bursaries that cover 85-100% of school fees (plus extras like lunches, buses and uniform). 46 pupils are at school today thanks to transformational bursaries like these, and more than 250 pupils have benefitted from transformational bursaries since 2013; that’s 25% of all financial assistance.

Lancashire selectors bowled over by Stanfield trio

We are extremely proud that three Stanfield boys have been selected to play for Lancashire County Cricket Club this season.

Zach Barton & Shivy Gautam Y5 and Nate White Y6 will represent the county’s Under 10s and Under 11s teams, respectively.

Cricket clubs across Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester nominate their best players at each year group to trial for Lancashire CCC. The boys were successful in numerous trials over recent months, culminating with the top 24 in each age category being selected to compete in a 40 over match before a final selection of 15 boys in each section.

They will now go on to compete against other cricket county teams such as Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire & Durham throughout the summer.

Mr Lyon said: “Shivy, Nate and Zach deserve enormous credit for their hard work, skill and commitment to doing their best every time they step on to the pitch. These qualities were clearly spotted by the Lancashire selectors and they fully deserve this wonderful opportunity.

“Sport plays a pivotal role in the life of our school and cricket is very much at the heart of that approach. We have been thrilled to watch so many boys and girls excelling at cricket this term. There is a real appetite to improve their skills even further and that’s great to see.”

Cricket success continues at Merchant Taylors’

It has been an excellent few weeks for cricket at Merchant Taylors’ School.

On Tuesday, our Under 15s team defeated Liverpool Bluecoat to progress to the last four of the Lancashire Cup, followed by victory for our Under 14s team on Thursday against St Mary’s College in the quarter-final of the Lancashire Cup.

The U14s travel to Sedbergh School next week to take part in the northern final of the National Cup, having defeated Altrincham Grammar School in the previous round.

This follows a successful half term which saw 72 boys and girls from local schools join our head of cricket coaching, Gary Yates, for a specialist two-day coaching camp.

Alongside daily lunchtime nets practice for senior boys, we have welcomed dozens of junior girls and boys for after-school cricket practice on the Boys’ School field.

We were also thrilled to learn that three Stanfield boys have been selected to play for Lancashire County Cricket Club this season. Zach and Shivy in Year 5 and Nate in Year 6 will represent the county’s Under 10s and Under 11s teams, respectively.

Training with the Lancashire CCC Academy is also set to begin in September once COVID restrictions are lifted, allowing aspirational young cricketers from across the local area to use our facilities.

Merchant Taylors’ and Moose Coffee have joined forces to offer a delicious new service to parents, pupils and visitors on matchdays at the Boys’ School.

Moose@Merchants will be on site upstairs at the Sports Centre each Saturday morning during term time serving hot and cold drinks and fresh breakfast options which can be enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the action.

The new pop-up cafe begins with this weekend’s cricket fixture against Cheadle Hulme and will continue until the end of the Summer term. Card payments are preferred and there will also be free wi-fi available on site.

Year 5 Boys U10 Cricket Report

Well done to the Year 5 boys who won their cricket matches against Birkenhead this week. Team Captains Shivy and Max have both written a match report, which you can read below.

It was perfect cricket weather for the boys’ U10s Cricket Team to travel away to their first fixture of the season. Hopes were high for a good contest, and of course a victory, as the team represented the school after a long time.

The pitch looked perfect to bowl first, Birkenhead won the toss, but they elected to bat first anyway.

Merchant Taylors’ fierce bowling attack conceded very few runs, limiting the opposition to a total score of 63 runs from 20 overs. Wickets fell at regular intervals throughout with Keshav Harave and Finlay Stiff taking the lion’s share. Rohan Patel did a great job in his debut as our Year 5 wicketkeeper. The whole team fielded well with superb backing-up and a fantastic direct hit from Jailaksh Saravanan.

Shivy Gautam and Zach Barton put up a very good opening batting partnership of 52 runs. Zach Barton out on 34 runs, with a brilliant catch from the fielding side. Shivy Gautam was retired on 39 runs after accelerating the run-rate with Jailaksh. Oliver Barton hit 3 back-to-back boundaries with Sam Ayres at the other end, both finishing the game off in style! Merchant Taylors’ finished on 129 from 20 overs.

Overall, Birkenhead put up a good fight, showing some good potential in the field, however the Merchants might was unstoppable today!

The boys’ B team travelled to Birkenhead for their first cricket fixture of the season. Captain Max Ryan lost the toss and Merchants’ were put into bat first. Cillian Forde and Thomas Birch were the opening pair and hit 16 runs off 4 overs. Max and Blake Cameron had the highest total of runs from their pair – 28 off 4 overs. Merchants got 295 runs off 16 overs.

Abhiraj Menon and Max picked up 7 wickets between them (Abhiraj – 3 Max – 4). Jay Roy, Blake and Thomas also picked up good wickets. Simon Holt took a superb catch and Jay had a brilliant run-out. Cillian and Alex Christophorou did a fantastic job behind the stumps as well! Birkenhead finished on 207 off 16 overs.

Birkenhead tried their best, but Merchants’ were too good for them today.

Sixth Form Physicists Win Atos STEM Challenge

Just before the half term break Lower 6th Physicists were thanked for their hard work and commitment throughout the national Atos STEM Challenge.

The girls were reminded that the quality of presentations seen by the panel of experts in the final was phenomenal and that their team should be incredibly proud of all that they have achieved together. They were then told the wonderful news that they had successfully won the category that they had entered, focusing on how the nuclear industry could cope with the current pandemic. The exciting news that their prizes are in the post was closely followed by the fact that the level of work they have completed and the time they have spent working on their project has also made them eligible for a CREST award.

A huge well done to Leia, Drew, Bibs, Faye and Emilie, they have shown that despite a difficult period of time in school they have still been able to pull together as a class, work collaboratively and not let standards slip.

MTS Make One Change Campaign

Throughout May we took part in the Make One Change Campaign which was organised by the Boys’ School Eco-Committee.

The focus of the campaign was making one small change to your daily life which will make a positive environmental impact. The change could have been something as simple as taking reusable bags to the supermarket or cycling to school/work instead of driving.

Lots of our pupils, parents and staff took part throughout the month and all made lots of different changes, which all had a positive impact on our environment.

Year 9 classes studied global warming and the human impact on different ecosystems, producing posters on topics such as the desert, the rainforest and the atmosphere.

Some other brilliant ideas included Mrs Gregson-Burt, who decided to go meat free on Monday’s throughout May. Her Greek meze tea looked delicious! Jacob in Year 7 along with his family gave a home to wildlife in their garden and recently had some ducklings hatch. Miss Robinson switched to using Smol laundry capsules. As well as being cruelty free, Smol packaging contains no plastic and is made from FSC approved materials which are all recyclable. Smol also commits itself to using less chemicals per wash.

Mrs Connor from the Development Team also made several changes for the Campaign including switching to plastic free washing tablets and eco softener, doing all washing at 30 degrees, witching to reusable cotton wool pads and plastic free Q tips.

Gregory in 1B also made a number of changes for the campaign, including not using plastic straws, making sure to recycle empty cans and drinking from a reusable water bottle. You can see him explain all about his changes in the video below.

These are just a number of the various changes that were made throughout our community, well done to everyone who took part, we hope you can try and keep up with the changes and help the environment.

Upper Sixth Turn Mufti Day Into ‘Mr Evans’ Day

Friday was mufti day at the Girls’ School and Mr Evans received a surprise when he found out what the Upper Sixth were wearing!

In his own words: ‘I have been for over four decades, a supporter of the Netherlands football team and every time there is a ‘mufti’ day I wear the team shirt. Today [Friday], unbeknown to me beforehand the Upper Sixth decided for their final ‘mufti’ day, to have a ‘Mr Evans day’ and imitate my outfit. Many of them carried a box similar to the one which I use to carry things around, and a juice bottle which I also carry each day. It was quite touching actually, and it caused general amusement.’
