MTS Make One Change Campaign

Throughout May we took part in the Make One Change Campaign which was organised by the Boys’ School Eco-Committee.

The focus of the campaign was making one small change to your daily life which will make a positive environmental impact. The change could have been something as simple as taking reusable bags to the supermarket or cycling to school/work instead of driving.

Lots of our pupils, parents and staff took part throughout the month and all made lots of different changes, which all had a positive impact on our environment.

Year 9 classes studied global warming and the human impact on different ecosystems, producing posters on topics such as the desert, the rainforest and the atmosphere.

Some other brilliant ideas included Mrs Gregson-Burt, who decided to go meat free on Monday’s throughout May. Her Greek meze tea looked delicious! Jacob in Year 7 along with his family gave a home to wildlife in their garden and recently had some ducklings hatch. Miss Robinson switched to using Smol laundry capsules. As well as being cruelty free, Smol packaging contains no plastic and is made from FSC approved materials which are all recyclable. Smol also commits itself to using less chemicals per wash.

Mrs Connor from the Development Team also made several changes for the Campaign including switching to plastic free washing tablets and eco softener, doing all washing at 30 degrees, witching to reusable cotton wool pads and plastic free Q tips.

Gregory in 1B also made a number of changes for the campaign, including not using plastic straws, making sure to recycle empty cans and drinking from a reusable water bottle. You can see him explain all about his changes in the video below.

These are just a number of the various changes that were made throughout our community, well done to everyone who took part, we hope you can try and keep up with the changes and help the environment.

Upper Sixth Turn Mufti Day Into ‘Mr Evans’ Day

Friday was mufti day at the Girls’ School and Mr Evans received a surprise when he found out what the Upper Sixth were wearing!

In his own words: ‘I have been for over four decades, a supporter of the Netherlands football team and every time there is a ‘mufti’ day I wear the team shirt. Today [Friday], unbeknown to me beforehand the Upper Sixth decided for their final ‘mufti’ day, to have a ‘Mr Evans day’ and imitate my outfit. Many of them carried a box similar to the one which I use to carry things around, and a juice bottle which I also carry each day. It was quite touching actually, and it caused general amusement.’

Girls Shortlisted for National Mandarin Speaking Competition

Larah Worthy, Varshaa Premakantha, Rohi Mirza and Jasleen Dhehi in Year 9 have been shortlisted to the final 40 of the National Mandarin Speaking Comptition hosted by British Council.

The girls only began to learn Mandarin during the last academic year, so it is a testament to their hard work and devotion to have been shortlisted for such an award. The competition required the girls to submit a video of themselves speaking Mandarin, so they decided to create a MasterChef-style competition, which you can view blow.

Best of luck for the competition, girls.

Introducing our new CCF Contingent Commander

We are delighted to announce that Major Paul Ennis has taken up the position of Contingent Commander, replacing Major Helen Irwin who retired in January. This is an exciting appointment for the CCF as we come out of lockdown and look to reenergise the activities of the Combined Cadet Force.

In his day job Paul is a Chartered Surveyor and the Managing Director of his own group of successful companies. He has a wide skill set and will be a fantastic role model to both cadets and adult instructors. Paul is no stranger to Merchant Taylors’ as his daughter Charlotte attended the Girls’ School up until a couple of years ago.

Paul’s association with the cadet force goes back to his own time at school where he learnt valuable skills that he has taken forward into his working life. In the 1980s he was commissioned and progressed through the ranks ending up as a Company Commander responsible for all Army Cadets in the north of Merseyside.

After a break due to work commitments he re-joined the cadet force in 2018 and has since been attached to the Royal Signals Cadet Force as the Detachment Commander.

We look forward to Paul taking on the responsibility of running the Merchant Taylors’ Combined Cadet Force as Contingent Commander and we are excited for this new chapter and for the further success of the cadets in the future.

Podcast success for alumni

It’s great to see a number of Old Boys and Old Girls having success in the podcast world.

Jane Garvey is the first woman to have two podcasts trending in the Podboard 100, which lists the UK’s most popular podcasts. Her new Radio 4 podcast Life Changing, joins her long running podcast, Fortunately with Fi and Jane, on the list. She can also be heard hosting the National Museums Liverpool’s podcast Re:PRESENT (Regarding the Present), in which she explores stories of today and see how they are reflected through the Museums’ collections and communities.

OC Arthur McBain appears in The Guardian’s top podcast picks of the week, with his spooky podcast ‘At Your Peril’, described as ‘Goosebumps for Grownups.’

We’ve been enjoying OC Charlie Beckett’s ‘Brew with Beckett‘ series recently, as he chats with rugby colleagues, former NFL star Jason Bell and the founders of the mental health charity Looseheadz, amongst others.

Finally, OG Kelly Cates chatted with Gabby Logan on her podcast, ‘The Midpoint‘, about career in sports broadcasting, life choices and challenges.
