Year 6 Evacuee Day

Last week our Year 6 girls were WW2 evacuees for the day!

The girls arrived at school in their costumes and were equipped with a gas mask box as well as snacks and toys for their long journey ahead. After arriving at the ‘train station’ and travelling to their new destination, the billeting officers (Miss Copping and Mrs Curwen) assigned each child to their new ‘foster’ family.

For the rest of the day the girls wrote letters home to their mothers and made their very own gas masks. The girls really immersed themselves into the experience and had a fantastic day. Thank you to the Year 6 parents for providing wonderful costumes and props.

Merchant Taylors’ x Sevenstore

During the October half term we welcomed some of the team from independent Liverpool retailer, Sevenstore to Merchant Taylors’ for the release of the new Adidas Barcelona trainer.

After discovering the history between the school and the founding of FC Barcelona, Sevenstore wanted to visit the school in order to tell the story of the Witty Brothers who are the reason Barcelona wear the famous red and blue ‘blaugrana’ to this very day.

You can read Sevenstores’ editorial below as well as view the video and photos that were shot at the Senior Boys’ school.

Inspired by the archives, adidas fall back into the 80’s, a time when the Barcelona first arrived to reimagine a new perspective on the sneaker. Dressed in a clean white colourway, the leather upper is comprised with off-white suede overlays adorning vibrant hits of royal blue to show off their signature three-stripe branding. Accentuating the clean-cut upper is a midsole mirrored from ‘70s Trimm Trab, but this time is more streamlined and suited for modern life. Finishing off the retro-indulged classic, adidas decoration comes in familiar gold foil detailing to the side and a commemorative City Series MMXX on the inside collar.

To commemorate the City Series arriving in Catalonia, SEVENSTORE follow the origins of Blaugrana – the eye-catching blend of deep red and blue that has adorned the backs of the greatest players to ever play the game. Through boyhood connections on the fields of a suburban Liverpudlian school, to adulthood in Barcelona, the Witty’s brother’s role in the foundation of the Catalonian football club has ingrained an integral piece of Merseyside into the culture of the club forever.

400th Celebrations

2020 is the 400th anniversary of our wonderful school, unfortunately due to the Covid19 crisis we haven’t quite been able to celebrate how we had intended to. A whole host of events have had to be cancelled, such as a service in the cathedral and an anniversary dinner which was to set to see over 400 guests welcomed to the Senior Boys’ site in a giant marquee.

With this being the case we thought we’d arrange for a special 400th anniversary treat for our pupils, in the form of cake! Thanks to our catering partner, Chartwells, every student enjoyed a 400 branded cupcake on Friday 6th November across each school site, you can see the photos of the day in the gallery below.

Senior Boys’ Trio Stand Together

Congratulations to Senior Boys’ pupils Oliver Bigley, Joseph Bigley and Jaiylen Ahearn who were recently chosen to sing alongside Sir Paul McCartney on the remastered version of ‘We All Stand Together’.

The song was originally released in 1984 as part of the children’s movie Rupert and the Frog Song. The animated short saw Rupert head out for a walk in the hills, eventually discovering a large number of frogs and witnessing ‘the frog song’, an event which only occurs once every few hundred years.

To celebrate Rupert the Bear’s 100th birthday the song has been rerecorded and the short remastered in 4k. You can see Oliver, Joseph and Jaiylen singing as part of the LIPA 4-19 Choir in the video below.

Boys’ School takes on Movember challenge

Some of our Senior Boys’ staff and Sixth Formers are taking on the Movember challenge this November.

Movember is the leading charity geared towards changing the face of men’s health, and by 2030 aims to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%. Since its inception in 2003, Movember has focused on mental health and suicide prevention as well as prostate and testicular cancer. It has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects across the globe challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.

To help raise money for this fantastic cause some of our Senior Boys’ staff including Mr Jacques, Mr Bonfante, Mr O’Brien, Mr O’Malley and Mr Harkness and a selection of our Sixth Formers will be becoming ‘Mo Bros’ and growing a moustache to raise money throughout November. If you’d like to make a donation you can do so by clicking HERE.

(We’ll be posting the results at the end of the month)

OC Chris creates innovative project to help homeless people

Developed by OC and architect Chris Hildrey, ProxyAddress has started its pilot in the London borough of Lewisham. The service uses the duplicated address details of existing homes to provide those facing homelessness with a consistent, secure, and free address which they can use to access the support they need.

Losing your home means losing your address. But in 21st century Britain, an address is not just a location – it’s a de facto form of ID; without one, people experiencing homelessness can be prevented from accessing vital services like maintaining or opening a bank account, applying for a job or a driving license, accessing benefits, receiving post, or even registering with a GP.

Chris says: ‘Nobody should be left alone or without recourse to help in times of need. The action already taken to help rough sleepers during the Covid-19 pandemic is a silver lining to a tragic situation but there remains a systemic barrier to helping those facing all types of homelessness: instability. Until stable housing and wrap-around support is available for all we need to find innovative ways to help those trapped in precarious situations. Now, more than ever, we have a duty to provide a lifeline to those most in need.’

ProxyAddresses are provided with explicit consent from property owners – including councils, housing associations, housing developers, private donations, and some of the 225,000 long-term vacant homes in England – without impacting the original property’s credit score, value, or postal deliveries.

Just like the 800,000 letters sent in the UK each year to Santa’s Grotto in Reindeerland – which ultimately go to a sorting office in Belfast– for post, the ProxyAddress serves only as a routing instruction rather than a final destination. Mail addressed to a person at their ProxyAddress can be redirected to a collection point of their choosing, ensuring their details – and ability to access support – stay the same throughout the recovery journey, no matter how often they move.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

Staff at the Senior Girls’ school took part in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ on Friday 25th September in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The event takes place in offices and schools across the UK, and is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing Cancer.

This year was slightly different however due to the ongoing Covid19 situation. That meant that this year the event was a ‘socially distanced’ coffee morning, this didn’t dampen spirits however and £301.35 was raised for a great cause.
