Carlyle De Salis

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School chef, Carlyle De Salis.

Our Catering Manager, Steve Shepherd, said “Carlyle began with us at Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School in October 2019, it did not take long until he became a valued member of the team. Carl’s (as he like to be called) experience encompassed a wide range of culinary and front of house skills which he loved to share with us, however his favourite cooking was without doubt his wife’s Anu. We were always jealous of Carl’s reflections of last night’s home dinner.

“Arriving in Liverpool from Sri Lanka, Carl and his family became lovers of the city and Liverpool Football Club. He quickly integrated into his local community and regularly contributed to local charities by providing hot meals to Liverpool’s homeless. Our catering team reflects on Carlyle with much love, we all have stories of how his wonderful nature touched us all, we will always remember working with him and are thoughts are with his wife Anu and his children.”

Headmaster, David Wickes, said: “There is an old saying that an army marches on its stomach. The same could also be said of a Boys’ School. Carlyle was someone who understood that, but who also took pride in producing quality sustenance for the boys; all delivered with warmth and kindness. He will be sorely missed by our school community.”

Our thoughts are with Carl’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Year 9 Investigate Women Composers

This term, Year 9 girls have been investigating Women Composers, undertaking independent research projects that examined primary and secondary sources as well as critical reception.  Composers from as early as Francesca Caccini (1587-c.1641) to Zoe Keating (1972-) have formed the subjects of lively debates and superb presentations as we explore how being female has shaped these composers’ personal lives and musical careers. Please see below two fantastic articles written by some of the girls.

MTBS Claim Victory in First Ever Virtual Sports Fixture

For the first time in the school’s 400 year history, we took part in a ‘virtual’ sports fixture against Rossall School. The competition was to see which school could amass the furthest distance by either walking or running during the February half-term.

With a total distance of 1206km covered, Merchant Taylors’ claimed victory. Well done to everyone who took part from both schools for getting active despite lockdown and getting plenty of fresh air. We look forward to competing in real life fixtures once again once it is safe to do so.

Well done to Year 11 Captain, Andrew Storch, who clocked this impressive 10k time.

Year 7 Create Captain Tom Poems

Year 7 have been studying poetry this term and Friday’s lesson was dedicated to Captain Sir Tom Moore. Below is a lovely poem written by Mya, Ellie, Charlotte and Sophia.

Gracefully, Sir Captain Tom entered the gates to heaven,
He found the end of the rainbow
Walking his last lap, proud and confident,
He was an idol for many-but no more.
Dedicated, the hero walked for the world,
Walking on, through the storm of 2020, hopeful.
He kept going through the storm, willful.
A warrior on the battle field of 2020 was he,
Heroic, selfless, a fighter,
And he never walked alone.

Work underway on new Stanfield playground

Development work is well underway to transform the playground facilities at Stanfield.

The wide-ranging plans will see the installation of a new multi-use games area (MUGA) at the rear of the playground, an experimental learning zone, a new active play area and an imaginative play space.

The new-look playground will also include a redesigned wildlife garden and pond as well as a sensory play area. The existing playground space will also be resurfaced in phase three.

All works are expected to be completed prior to the beginning of the summer term in April 2021.

Elizabeth Lynan, headmistress at Stanfield Merchant Taylors’, said: “Our children already love spending time in our existing playground, so we hope they will be absolutely thrilled when we unveil all of its new features.

“At the heart of our plans is the creation of an environment that promotes teaching and learning by creating different zones with specific considerations for pupils of different ages to enjoy.

“Of course, effective play also helps to support and enhance children’s physical and emotional wellbeing, allowing them to balance risk, challenge, fun and safety.

“These factors are all crucial to an excellent Stanfield Merchant Taylors’ education and the scale of this new investment demonstrates our commitment to ensuring our children continue to receive the very best facilities and opportunities on offer.”

Applications are now open for entry to Reception in September 2021. For further information, please visit our Admissions page.

Time & Space Event

We welcomed back Bill Jennings and his company Time & Space to provide though-provoking and conversation-inducing sessions for boys in Year 7 and their Mums and boys in Year 8 and their Dads.

Bill presented to us in person last year, in the Williams Hall. Our families found his advice and guidance to be extremely helpful, so we were keen for him to visit us again this year. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus pandemic has prevented Bill from travelling from his native Melbourne, Australia. However, thanks to the wonders of the internet and a reliable alarm clock in his house, Bill was able to run sessions this week from his shed at home.

Across two evenings, 110 members of the Merchant Taylors community (boys and parents) were encouraged to have more open, regular and empathetic conversations with each other. Sessions were conducted via Zoom meetings with plenary presentations interspersed with more intimate conversations in breakout rooms. Senior pupils were on hand to facilitate these discussions and lead some of the activities.

Boys and their parents had to bring a treasure to share with each other – something which represents the importance of the relationship between them. Items as diverse as a pair of football boots, family photographs, baby clothes and stuffed toys were all present, each uniquely poignant and every one evoking memories and emotions which propelled those present to have important and honest discourse. I am sure that many of these conversations may never have happened otherwise.

Despite the remote nature of the presentation the evenings were a huge success, and we look forward to working with Bill again in the future.

Virtual Extra-Curricular Sessions

More than 40 pupils had the chance to listen to Prof Graeme Close, who talked about Diet, Nutrition and his experiences in elite sport. Graeme is part of the England Rugby setup and gave the group an insight in to what he was tasked with doing whilst away with the side during the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The following day, 30+ boys and girls joined GB and England Olympian Michael Hoare for a ‘Hockey at Home’ session. This gave the group a chance to train with an Olympic athlete and ask some questions about his journey from the NW to the Rio Olympics. He was so impressed with the group he has agreed to come back and do some more sessions in the coming weeks with some special guests, watch this space.

Lower Sixth Physicists reach final round of Atos STEM Challenge

Lower Sixth Physicists, Leia Martin, Bibs Ball, Faye Vaughan, Emilie Walker and Drew Grimmant have progressed to the final round of the Atos STEM Challenge.

The talented quintet has made it this far by producing an essay on the how the nuclear industry can come up with strategies to cope with the demands placed on them during the COVID pandemic and national lockdown periods. The girls have worked so well together as a group and have been resourceful in the way that they have collected their research, taking part in zoom meetings and phone calls with nuclear experts.

They have received great feedback for their work so far and now have until March to develop their ideas and prepare a presentation which will be delivered before a panel of judges. We wish them the best of luck. Well done, Girls!
