Race for Life 2019

On Sunday 7th July, MTGS staff (and some of their family members!) came together to run another Race For Life at Sefton Park in loving memory of our colleague and friend Sian Tickle. Thank you to the staff at MTGS for their continued support either through donations to Cancer Research or by cheering for us on the day! Well done, Team Tickle!

Sophie Ennis Finishes Runner Up in Ocean Rescue Competition

Earlier this year, students were encouraged to enter Sky’s Ocean Rescue Competition. The girls had to write a 600-word blog to inform people of the problems that plastics can cause in the oceans. We are delighted that Sophie Ennis in Year 9 has been chosen as one of just five runners up in the competition. The judges praised Sophie’s writing for its great emotive language, interesting facts and detailed writing. The blog is currently on display on the Eco Committee board for you to read. Well done Sophie!

Isaac Lancel-Watkinson Cast in Lead Musical Role

Merchant Taylors’ pupil Isaac Lancel-Watkinson has been cast in the revival of hit Broadway musical, Mame.

Isaac, who is a Year 6 pupil, will be joined by Harriet Thorpe (Absolutely Fabulous) and Olivier Award winner Tim Flavin (On Your Toes) for the show, which is opening in Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester and continues around the country.

Isaac will be playing the role of ‘Young Patrick’ in the musical, which is set in New York City and spans the Great Depression as well as World War II. Mame Dennis and her intellectual and arty clique are disrupted when her deceased brother’s 10-year-old son, Patrick, is entrusted into her care.

Rather than bow to convention, Mame tries her hand at several jobs with comically, disastrous results but preserves with good humour and an irrepressible sense of style. A funny yet touching show includes the title song; Mame which is potentially one of the most spectacular chorus numbers ever to be performed.

Mame will run from 27th September to 9th November 2019 at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester. Everyone at Merchant Taylors’ is very proud of Isaac and wishes him the best of luck!

Aztec Pupils Travel Through Time

Year 4 attended the Aztec Calmecac school this week to learn to become an Aztec priestess!

A fun day was arranged where pupils learnt about Aztec schooling, tasted Aztec food, made a lucky charm and performed an Aztec dance, culminating in two Aztec sacrifices to please the Gods.

Luckily, the Gods looked favourably on our two girls, Karinne and Emily and they were reborn!

GCSE PE Students Attend the Athlete Factory

On Tuesday 25th June, the Year 10 GCSE PE group attended the Athlete Factory in Chester, for the annual fitness testing trip.  The Athlete Factory is a high performance gym, where everyone from novice gym goers to professional athletes and teams train in their state of the art training facility.

The purpose of the trip, was to be able to complete a variety of fitness tests to gather data which will be used during their coursework next academic year.  Throughout the day the boys where tested on the various components of fitness as well as given a nutritional talk by former England Rugby international and British and Irish Lion, Phil Greening.  Phil has a wealth of experience with Strength and Conditioning, as well as Nutrition to which he is currently working as a Performance Coach for the USA Rugby XV’s and VII’s teams.

All the boys had a fantastic day, took in all the advice and guidance on how to improve their game, through the knowledge of the coaches there.  Thank you to Phil, Ryan and Chris for the fantastic experience and we hope to see the Athlete Factory brand keep growing each year.

Carnegie Lunch 2019

On Tuesday 18th June, 16 boys from Years 7-9 gathered in the library for our annual Carnegie lunch, which has been held every year since 2002.

The Carnegie Medal, a national award for a work of children’s fiction, was this year given to The Poet X, a novel in verse by Elizabeth Acevedo, a Dominican-American writer.  In her acceptance speech, she said that a novel should be both a mirror, reflecting the culture of the readers, but also a window, enabling children to experience the lives and emotions of characters very different from themselves.

The Shadowers’ Award, voted for by all the groups that take part in the reviewing of the shortlisted books, was also awarded to The Poet X.  We watched the event live at MTBS, which took place in the British Library in London.

Our own favourite book was Rebound by Kwame Alexander, also a verse novel.  Although all pupils who posted reviews on the Carnegie website received a prize, the winner was Alex Meadows, who wrote three perceptive reviews.  On the Carnegie website children from reading groups throughout the country posted over 7000 reviews, which can be read by other participants, and the authors.

Swimmers Compete In National Team Championships

On Saturday 15 June, 5 boys took part in the English Schools National Swimming Team Championships at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Pool.

Having qualified for the finals at the recent North West area Championships’ Merchant Taylors took their place alongside 96 of the top swimming schools in the country.  The competition was broken down in to 3 categories – Small Schools, Mixed Schools and Open.

We were competing on the Open Schools category along with the other top 24 ranked schools in the country.  Just getting to the finals was a brilliant achievement but the boys were not there to make up the numbers.

Z. Mukhtar, C. Kirby, J. Wake, S. Harave and W. Irvine did exceptionally well despite us not being able to train and prepare for the event like we are used to, finishing 2nd in the Mixed Medley B final to finish ranked 10th and 3rd in the Freestyle B final to finish ranked 11th nationally, Well done to all the boys!

International Women in Engineering Day

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, some Year 7 and Year 9 students at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School were set the challenge of investigating and building structures in their Physics and Technology lessons.

The girls had to work together to produce a a structure that could support a small weight, using only spaghetti and jelly babies as their materials. The girls are to be congratulated on their team working skills, resilience (as their towers collapsed repeatedly) and the range of ideas as they had.

There was some amazing work and the winning team was ‘Sticky Mess’ with a wigwam style tower reaching a height of 28 cm. Well done to all those involved!
