Biology Students Visit UoL School Of Life Sciences

On Wednesday 12th June, our Year 12 Biology students were invited to the University of Liverpool School of Life Sciences to take part in a practical. They spent the day in the laboratory learning how to use a range of specialist equipment including micropipettes, rocking platforms and protein gel electrophoresis.

The girls worked hard to separate the proteins found in the muscles of fish, in order to build a phylogenetic tree to show the evolutionary relationships between the various species. The girls worked well, in groups, using a range of equipment and techniques, that were new to them. Well done, girls!

Merchant Taylors’ Hosts ‘Talking Minds’ Mental Health Conference

On Friday 24th May, Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School played host to a conference on mental health, entitled “Talking Minds”.

Educators from all over the country came to hear talks from mental health experts Natasha Devon MBE, Jonny Benjamin MBE, Dick Moore, and former England Rugby League International, Danny Sculthorpe. They told their stories and gave advice on how schools can improve the mental well-being of students. Staggered throughout the day were workshops sessions delivered by a range of experts from the University of Liverpool, ChildLine and Merseyside Mindfulness.

A proportion of tickets for the event were given to local primary and secondary schools, and it is hoped that more events like this can be put on in the future. Organiser, and Head of Middle School, Randal Yates said

It was a pleasure to host Talking Minds and we were extremely privileged to have the likes of Natasha and Jonny speak. If the advice given out by industry professionals to the teachers in attendance can help even one student, then the event has been a success. The well-being of our students is of upmost importance, and it is even more important in the age of end-of-course examinations to put strategies in place to help support pupils through their journey at school.”

Students Win Trip to ESRF in Grenoble

Three Sixth Form students from Merchant Taylors’ have won an all expenses paid trip to the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, after taking part in a national competition run by Warwick University.

The ESRF is the world’s most intense X-ray source and a centre of excellence for fundamental and innovation-driven research in condensed and living matter science. Located in Grenoble, France, the ESRF owes its success to the international cooperation of 22 partner nations, of which 13 are Members and 9 are Associates.

Samantha Harrison, Pippa Bailey and Maggie Nichols will all spend four days in Grenoble after winning the XMaS Scientist Experience 2019 competition. The girls were tasked with writing a two page essay on ‘What is the legacy of Dorothy Hodgkin, both in the study of structure on an atomic scale and in championing the cause of women in science?’, as well as why they would like to go on the trip.

Once in Grenoble all three students will experience what life might be like as an international research scientist. They will visit the ESRF and take part in the Synchrotron@School Programme. The programme is an innovative educational programme which originated in 2013 as a partnership between the ESRF and the “Académie de Grenoble”. It consists of a full day of scientific immersion tailored specifically for high-school students.

A massive congratulations to all three from everyone at Merchant Taylors’, we look forward to hearing all about the trip!

He joined Wigan Athletic as an Under 14, having previously played for Liverpool academy. On the pitch James shows great leadership skills, is highly competitive and is a strong one-vs-one defender.

Success for SaxPac, Bring on Birmingham!

Lewis Thornley ARSM, Rory Ellis, George Farrar, Jay Singh, Archie Rawson and Rachel Burnett otherwise known as SaxPac, the formidable sextet which took the first round of ‘Music for Youth’ by storm. Superb renditions of ‘Defying Gravity’ and ‘Witch Hunt’ blew the judges away!

All members of the aged 14-18 ensemble have at least a grade 8 merit under their belt but Lewis recently attained a distinction in his diploma and other band members are not far behind.

Mr Lock, the group leader, said this of the collective: “As individuals or as an ensemble they are fantastic musicians and a pleasure to work with, I am immensely proud of them. Fingers crossed they can go all the way”

If the plucky blowers are successful in Birmingham, the opportunity to perform in the Royal Albert Hall awaits. This competition has pushed SaxPac to new heights of musical excellence and regardless of the outcome in Birmingham, MTBS Music Department is extremely proud of all they have achieved so far.

If you would like to hear an exclusive preview of SaxPac’s new repertoire specifically chosen for Birmingham, come along to ‘Musical Inspirations’ on Thursday 9th of May at 7:30 or check out their recent Music for Youth Festival performance below.
