Old Boy goes live on BBC Breakfast

Hrishi Vankatesh, a former ESB learner and Old Boy of Merchant Taylors, spoke about how he has become a confident communicator through his ESB assessments. He also shared his top tips for people who are nervous of speaking in public.

He also spoke about his personal journey since being diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum, and how ESB has helped him to grow in confidence and communicate well with others.

ESB’s Chief Executive, Tina Renshaw accompanied Hrishi to the BBC studios, and says,

“We enjoyed an exciting morning taking part in a topical dialogue on the importance of oracy. Hrishi spoke eloquently to the BBC audience of over 1.5 million viewers. It was very supportive of presenter Dan Walker to take such a personal interest in the issue by tweeting to his 515,000 followers about the value of public speaking”.

On the programme, Hrishi said: “When I started with English Speaking Board, it really helped to boost my confidence and just made me feel like people wanted to hear what I wanted to say”.

Tina added: “Hrishi’s performance on BBC Breakfast follows his recent appearance at the Houses of Parliament speaking on ESB’s behalf on the subject of oracy. He is also joining us at our Young Speaker of the Year event in November, as a worthy winner of our ESB Ambassador award”.

On his time at School, Deputy Headmaster Bob Simpson said: “Joining the school in 2010, it did not take Hrishi long to make a significant contribution to Debating at MTBS. Within weeks he was a pivotal presence in GTX Debating and as a Year 7 was a regular contributor to the Grensted Debating Society, often pitting his wits against Sixth Formers. As time went on, Hrishi featured in a number of external competitions, including the Schools’ Mace as a Year 10 student, and his love of general knowledge, current affairs and politics ensured that Hrishi was a lively and well-informed debater all the way through his Sixth Form career”.

“It comes as no surprise that he continues to champion this most vital of skills. Indeed, Hrishi’s legacy to the school is that debating is firmly embedded in our curriculum as well as being a popular extra-curricular option”.

Magical Maths Returns to MTPS

Professor Poopenshtinken had travelled 25 hours straight out of Eastern Europe when he spotted the school in the area beside the road, looming with powerful presence in the cool air. He was young pupils, not very old, ten or eleven at most, rushing around with a look of excitement. It was clear they were here for Magical Maths!

The Professor steered himself toward the school, and down to the room where many energetic youngsters were already waiting. After a few ground rules (like no pulling the Professor’s hair), the children rotated through our three cracking activities. Week one of Magical Maths had begun, and here is the story of how it panned out…

The Biggest Number
For Key Stage One we kicked things off with a game consisting of using our bodies to make numbers. The children were in pairs or small groups and used their bodies to make the biggest number they could. Some did this standing, whereas others were lying down.

Shape Bingo
A super fun game that helps with shape recognition. I hear there were some very close games this week, with some very impressive young mathematicians playing.

Fun and Games with Games Galore!
The final activity this week was all fun and games from our amazing ‘Games Galore’ activity pack.

We played a game called ‘Heads and Tails’. It has statistics and strategic themes, and sparked lots of competition within the group. We eventually whittled it down to just a few who did super-well!

A MAGICALLY good first week had by all. We’re all math’d out now, and the Professor’s taking a rest at the Holiday Inn before his flight home tomorrow morning.

See you next week (rumour has it our world class detective is coming to visit),

Brian Banks.

Joint School Production: Fame

You are warmly invited to the Merchant Taylors’ School production of ‘Fame’, running from 28th November – 1st December 2018.

Dr Gill and Mr Holroyd directed ‘Fame’ in 2002; they are revisiting the experience in November this year but this time, with the assistance of Louise Edge, the choreographer. Rehearsals are going well and the cast of 28 are working very hard.

The show presents fame in two opposite ways: as an inspirational dream for characters like Nick (played by Cameron Avann) and Serena (Angelina Bennett), and as a dangerously intoxicating demon which tempts characters like Carmen (Charlotte Hulme) into over-reaching themselves. Other characters such as Tyrone Jackson (Daniel Naguib) face different hurdles such as learning difficulties. The show is  dominated by powerful dancing and singing as well as humour and we hope it will be a sell-out as in 2002!

Tickets are available from Pritchard’s Bookshop, the School or you can purchase them online by clicking here.

Primary School WWI Themed Art Workshop

A group of talented artists from year 6 were involved in producing Art work, last term, to be exhibited at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on 11th November 2018 to represent the 100th Anniversary of the First World War.

The theme of the concert is ‘Remembrance and Hope’ whereby the girls made 3D felt poppies to symbolise remembrance and delicate Angelina bowls on the theme of irises which are a symbol for hope, faith, wisdom, courage, and admiration. The girls worked with enthusiasm and energy and their results were stunning!

Their work is now on display in the entrance of MTPS. For more information about attending the Merchant Taylors’ Concert for Remembrance and Hope please click here.

Merchant Taylors’ Welcomes New Headmaster at Senior Boys’ School

The start of the new academic year has seen the appointment of the twenty third Headmaster at Merchant Taylors’ Senior Boys’ School. David Wickes joins us from Warwick School where he worked as Deputy Headmaster.

Mr Wickes has a rich academic background and holds a degree in Modern History from Oxford University as well as an MA in War Studies from King’s College, London. He began his teaching career at Dulwich College in 1997 and has more than twenty years’ extensive experience of working in the independent education sector.

He left Dulwich for Abingdon School, in Oxfordshire, in 2008 where he was appointed Upper Master and taught history and sport, before joining Warwick School in 2013.

Talking about his new role, David, said: “It is a real honour to have been appointed Headmaster at such an exciting time in Merchant Taylors’ history, with its 400-year anniversary milestone just a few years away. It is one of the most prestigious independent schools in the North West with an enviable reputation to match.

From the moment I visited the school, I was struck by its warmth and tremendous community spirit. It is a school which is highly respected for its values and heritage and I’m looking forward to getting to know all the staff, parents, alumni and, most importantly, the boys.”

Talking about what he will bring to the new role, he added: “I have worked at three large independent boys’ schools and under my tenure, I will ensure that the school continues to raise confident, compassionate young men with a curiosity in the world about them, who can go on to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams.”

As well as his academic successes, David has coached rugby to a high standard including being Backs Coach for the England Under 16s team from 2007 to 2013.

Founded in 1620, MTBS is a leading North West independent school for boys aged 11-18. This year, we enjoyed fantastic A Level results, being the top performing boys’ school in Sefton, with one in five boys achieving A* and one in ten boys gaining places at Oxbridge.

Excellent GCSE Results Keep Merchant Taylors’ at the Forefront of Education

It has been a tremendous year for Merchant Taylors’ Schools with more than 1 in 3 GCSE results being awarded A* or the new grade 8/9. Overall, 78% of grades achieved A*-B/9-6 grades, making this a year to remember.

At Merchant Taylors’, we have an excellent reputation for achieving top grades, but pupils here are also involved in a vast array of extra-curricular activities. Every year students celebrate huge success in music, sport and many other areas. This particular year group saw the boys become National Cricket Champions in 2017, while the girls excelled in athletics, becoming Sefton Champions.

GCSE results day can be a nerve-wrecking time, but students have done themselves proud by working hard and taking advantage of all the help the Schools were able to consistently offer.

Jay Singh from Allerton in Liverpool, achieved the best results at the Boys’ School having gained 7 grades 9s and 3 A*. Not only has Jay done extremely well academically, he also plays hockey and cricket and is working towards Grade 8 saxophone. Jay, along with three other boys and a pupil from the Girls’ School, have their own band called Sax Pac who have played many gigs and have even appeared on the Linda McDermott show on BBC Radio Merseyside.

Matthew Marsh from Ormskirk, also did incredibly well having achieved 6 grade 9s, 3 A* and an A. Alongside his studies, Matthew plays hockey and is a member of the CCF.

Matthew Cheshire who lives locally in Crosby, gained 4 grade 9s, 4 A* and 2 grade 8s. A keen swimmer, Matthew is also a tri-athlete and starts his Duke of Edinburgh Gold award in September.

Ewan Rooney, from Formby, was pleased to achieve 2 grade 9s, 3 A*, 3 grade 8s and a 6. Ewan recently played a mobster in a production of To Kill a Mockingbird and is also a keen rugby and cricket player.

At the Girls’ School, Samantha Harrison (pictured here receiving results whilst on holiday) who lives in St Helens, was the top performer with 8 grade 9s, 1 grade 8 and 1 A*. Sam is a member of the CCF and plans to study a degree in Physics with Spacecraft Engineering, with the hope of one day working for NASA. Sam has also been awarded a scholarship to attend the Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ Sixth Form.

Dite Bagdonaite from Crosby, achieved 8 grade 9s and 1 grade 8. Dite is an integral member of the Merchants’ family with a busy extra-curricular timetable; she is Captain of the General Knowledge Club, a member of the CCF, sings in the Chamber Choir and takes part in regular school productions.

Abigail Jones (pictured together with Dite), from Southport, achieved 4 grade 9s, 4 grade 8s and 1 grade 7, plus an A. A keen swimmer and lover of sport, Abigail spent the summer on the School Sports Tour to Australia and Singapore and played in the Sydney Olympic Park where her team won their hockey match.

Leah Jay from Runcorn (pictured with proud auntie), achieved 1 grade 9, 4 grade 8s, and 3 grade 7s. Leah gained a Sports scholarship and bursary at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School and hopes to become a PE teacher.

David Wickes, who takes up the post of Headmaster at the Boys’ School in September 2018, commented “Our young men have clearly embraced life at Merchant Taylors’ and have taken advantage of the many opportunities on offer here. Through their dedication, commitment and ambition, they have challenged themselves and have not been found wanting. It is pleasing to see so many of the students achieving the highly prized grade 9 which has been introduced to distinguish the real top performers. When this is set alongside the many other interests that they pursue outside of the classroom, it shows that these young men are an impressive group and make us all very proud. Well done to all of them and also to the parents and staff who have supported them over the years.”

Headmistress at the Girls’ School, Claire Tao was equally happy with the achievements of her students. “It has certainly been a great year for our girls. They have risen to the challenge of the new GCSEs. Their hard work has paid off and they are now enjoying the great results they deserve. There is enormous pressure on young people to excel in their exams and I believe the support and care we offer all of our students really helps them. We provide so much in terms of value added teaching and learning and we continually encourage our students to pursue their interests and passions. Congratulations to all the girls and thank you to the wonderful staff who have helped them along the way.”

It has been another great year for Merchant Taylors’ Schools. Two thirds of our students achieved A*-B grades in their A Levels with eight heading to Oxford and Cambridge, the world’s most prestigious universities.

Merchant Taylors’ prides itself on developing students who year after year achieve some of the best A Level results in the region. We focus on students of varying academic abilities to help them to achieve their ultimate potential, through both their academic studies and a wide variety of activities from music and sport to the Combined Cadet Force and charity work. This year, students are going on to study a diverse range of subjects at some of the best universities in the UK. Rebecca Southwart, from Ormskirk, achieved A* A* A and is reading Chemistry at Oxford.

Head Boy, Tom Barker-Weinberger from Ormskirk (pictured here with proud Mum), gained 3 A* and an A, allowing him to accept his place at Cambridge to read History. Tom agreed to sit his initial entrance paper for Cambridge but then discovered he would be in Sri Lanka on a school cricket tour! Having liaised with several international schools, and with the help of the local embassy, Tom was able to sit the paper in Sri Lanka around his matches!

George Lavelle, who plays for Lancashire County Cricket Club and the England Second Cricket Team, achieved 3 A grades. George is taking a year out to play cricket in Australia before starting a degree at Loughborough University studying Economics & Finance.

Harry Maitland achieved A*, A, B and is deferring a place at the University of Leeds in order to pursue his rock star dreams! Harry is a fantastic drummer in a band called Rats who already have a recording deal. Their single ‘Weekend’ is available now and the band will be hitting the festival circuit next year.

Headmistress at the Girls’ School, Claire Tao, is delighted with her students’ achievements: “The girls have done incredibly well. Their results are a testament to their strong work ethic, resilience and the way they are able to balance their studies with the myriad of other interests they engage in. I am particularly proud of how the girls and staff have coped with the increased uncertainty that comes with the newly reformed A Levels. The ethos of the School and support of the whole community have played a significant role in the girls’ success. Well done.”

Deiniol Williams, Headmaster at the Boys’ School is equally delighted. “The boys have done such a great job. They have shown enormous dedication to their studies and to their School, and are now enjoying their just rewards. The new A Levels have challenged us all but everyone has responded incredibly well and again we are enjoying some truly excellent results. Congratulations to all of our boys but also to the parents and staff who have supported them along the way.”
