Old Boy donates equipment to DT department

The DT department of the Boys’ School was grateful to receive a very kind donation of equipment from Old Boy Geoffrey Brazendale.
Mr Brazendale (1949 – 58) made the donation personally in October 2017 having travelled from his home in Cumbria. He was met by staff from the Alumni Relations Office and had the experience of a modern-day school lunch before presenting the micrometers to some Middle School pupils and Sixth Formers in the afternoon.

He had previously attended Speech Day in 2016 when one of his peers had been the Guest Speaker.  Following this he visited the school on a couple of occasions and felt he wanted to share his lifelong passion for engineering with current pupils in a practical way.

Mr Brazendale worked as a factory inspector in the North-East for a number of years and contacted the School about a gift for the DT Department.  Not only did engineering form an integral part of his working life but also his interest in motorcycles.  He published a book on the history of the sidecar in 2013.

Our thanks go to Geoff for his very kind gift to the School. Mr Brazendale’s book entitled ‘The Sidecar: A History’ is available in the Boys’ School library or to purchase at the following link.

MTGS Success in Eco Schools Debate

On Tuesday 7th, five Year 10 girls travelled down to London to take part in the first Eco Schools Debate Challenge. All 5 girls made excellent contributions during debates based on important environmental issues such as whether deforestation only has negative consequences, whether the demand for water will lead to conflict and the importance of energy security over food security. The girls competed  at a high standard against several other schools and were marked on the quality, relevance and timing of their debates. The team raised interesting and critical points and responded well under pressure to make excellent counter-arguments within the time restrictions.

MTGS finished in 4th place overall which is an outstanding result! Mollie Jones was awarded a medal for outstanding individual performance with her contributions being recognised by judges in each of the debates. Well done to all of the girls involved!

The team was made up of the following girls:

Mollie Jones

Molly Dean

Emma Williams

Georgia Clark

Francesca Marshall

Boys Win Merseyside Schools Table Tennis Team Championships

Our boys performed well at the Merseyside Championships last Saturday – they began with an emphatic 8-0 win over Formby High,  dropping no sets and Harry Griffiths earning the decisive point on his 13th birthday.

The final match against Sacred Heart was much tougher affair. In the 1st match Max Davies had to come from behind to beat the opposition’s No.1 whilst younger broth Rhys ran out a comfortable 3-0 win on the adjacent table. Next up were twins Nick and Chris Moustaka who both edged 5 set matches against tough opponents. This left Rhys to set up a guaranteed win by beating Sacred Heart’s best player which he duly completed 3-0 before each of the boys produced a 2nd win each resulting in an overall 8-0 victory. (Photo attached)

This qualifies the boys to enter the National School Team Championships as Merseyside’s representative – at the next stage they will compete in a group of 6 county champions (usually from the North-West & Midlands)with the top 2 progressing to one of 4 regional finals comprising 16 teams in total – a combination of these 5 boys have made it to that stage in each of the last 2 years in the U/13 age group. This may be more of a challenge with such a young team in the U/16s but they are progressing well.

Junior Boys’ Harvest Donations

Last month, the Junior Boys’ School gathered lots of food to donate to Bosco House in Liverpool, a supported housing group. Bosco House are a wonderful charity who provide a range of support and accommodation to people in order to help them move towards independent living.

Year 5 gave a lovely assembly to talk about how people from all around the world celebrate harvest time and explaining how the food they had donated would help the those who are supported by Bosco House. The boys also gave thanks for all that they have in their lives and expressed how important it was for the school to help and share food amongst our community.

Year 3 Boys Test Out the School’s New 3D Printer

Year 3 boys were the first in the Junior Boys’ school to design and print objects on the new 3D printer. The pupils used software within the Purple Mash website to create a vehicle of their choice. The boys then had to successfully save their work in the correct area before it was printed on the new Ultimaker 2+ 3D printer over half term.

The boys are very excited about seeing their creations being made in front of them and the possibilities of objects to create are endless. Pupils across all year groups will be using the printer at some time soon so watch this space for more creations soon.

Girls visit University of Liverpool to celebrate the 150th birthday of Marie Curie

Lower 6th Physicists attended an event at Liverpool University today to celebrate the 150th birthday of Marie Curie.
The day focused around Marie Curie’s triumphs and the adversity she had to overcome to become the first female Nobel prize winner. Hands on activities allowed students to develop their knowledge on radiation, and a live satellite link to CERN gave an insight into the careers of researchers and the importance of collaboration. Attending students were required to pre submit a poster focusing on pivotal women in science. MTGS students were praised for their design and that fact that they highlighted a number of women who have paved the way for future female physicists. The standard of poster was excellent, and our students were pleased to be awarded 3rd place, receiving a certificate from Professor Carsten P Welsch. The day was thoroughly enjoyable, and highlighted the important role that women play in science. Well done to the girls for being part of this fabulous celebration.
