Cricket masterclass with Lancashire star Ellie

Lancashire Thunder captain and wicket-keeper Ellie Threlkeld visited school to deliver a coaching session to our senior girls.

The session began with a focus on catching, where girls were encouraged girls to adopt the correct stance, head and hand positions to maximise their fielding ability.

Ellie, who also plays for Manchester Originals in The Hundred series, then showcased her wicket-keeping skills, conducting drills with our head of cricket coaching Gary Yates, himself a former Lancashire player and coach.

Girls saw first-hand the speed and accuracy required to play professional cricket.

Finally, girls were coached on batting as they watched Ellie explain the nuances of an effective batting style, both at the wicket and in our outdoor practice nets.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our girls to continue to develop their skills and passion for cricket and we thank Ellie for giving up her time to share her knowledge and experience with them.

Shakespeare Shorts

A collection of electrifying performances from pupils in Years 7 to 13 combined to light up the Shakespeare North Playhouse.

It was an evening of laughter, farce, tension and intrigue as Merchant Taylors’ became the first senior school to perform in front of a full audience at the Prescot theatre, which opened last year.

Pupils performed four abridged versions of well-known Shakespearean plays – A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet, each with a contemporary twist.

The evening also featured a series of stunning character soliloquys including Mercutio, Iago, Juliet and Portia.

Well done to all of the cast and crew and a special thank you to Ms Gregson-Burt and Mr Davenport for all of their hard work and creativity in putting the show together.

CCF Inspection Day 2023

We were delighted to host our annual CCF Inspection Day, where we welcomed Air Commodore Shaun Harris CBE as our Inspecting Officer for this year.

Our CCF contingent currently has almost 250 officers and cadets and, with a further 100 cadets set to join us at Year 9 in September, we have one of the largest voluntary contingents in the country.

Cadets organised a number of stands for Inspection Day, showcasing the skills of our cadet NCOs and the opportunities on offer with help from the military family.

There were also a range of activities available, including an inflatable obstacle course, flight simulator, team building and drone flying.

Many of our younger pupils in Years 6 to 8 were also able to enjoy the experience prior to the official beginning of Inspection Day, allowing them to get a taste of life in the CCF.

Pupils learn from KnifeSavers talk

We were delighted to welcome Consultant Surgeon and KnifeSavers founder Dr Nikhil Misra to Merchant Taylors’ for a talk which focused on educating and empowering pupils on how to treat life threatening knife injuries.

Old Crosbeian Dr Misra informed pupils that after being stabbed, a person can bleed to death in just 5 minutes whilst a rapid response ambulance can often take around 7 minutes to arrive at the scene, meaning the need for controlling bleeding is critical in order to preserve a life.

Dr Misra also showcased how we can help deal with bleeding caused by knife injuries through Bleed Control Kits. These kits have been designed to provide real-time assistance to those who are dealing with bleeding from a knife wound, giving them high quality, life-saving equipment.

We’d like to thank Dr Misra for giving up his time to educate pupils on this highly important topic, if you’d like more information surrounding KnifeSavers please check out their website.

Merchant Taylors’ partners with the Ashinaga Foundation

Merchant Taylors’ has recently partnered with the Ashinaga Foundation, an educational charity that supports orphans around the world, to help put its lost property to good use. With a history of more than 55 years, Ashinaga’s support has enabled more than 110,000 orphaned students to gain access to higher education.

You can read more about their work here.

Old Crosbeian, Hector Bagley (2010), works for the charity in Uganda, and he has been instrumental in making the partnership a reality. The school has donated its spare lost property to the children Mr Bagley works with, providing them with much needed items. It’s lovely to see our lost property being put to good use and we are delighted to be able to help the Ashinaga Foundation and the children they support.

AJIS Quiz Competition

Six talented Stanfield pupils put their intelligence to the test in the AJIS Quiz Competition over the weekend. Taking place at Bury Grammar School on Saturday 25th March, the competition saw contestants tackle ten rounds of challenging questions on a variety of topics.

Our team of Year 6 students, consisting of Sean, James, Sam, Jess C, Jess W, and April, excelled in their efforts and came in a very close second place, narrowly losing out to Bury Grammar by just a single point. Their impressive performance was a testament to their exceptional teamwork, knowledge, and enthusiasm.

We would like to express our gratitude to the event organisers as well as our talented pupils and their supportive parents for their dedication and commitment to this initiative. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate future events where our students can continue to showcase their vast array of skills and knowledge.

Boys learn CSI skills

A group of boys took part in a special activity learning about the complexities of crime scene investigation.

The forensic science session, part of our regular TENDO enrichment programme, focussed on BPA, or Blood Pattern Analysis. It was led by school science technician and former forensic laboratory scientist, Emma Birchall.

Pupils in Years 10 to 12 learned how forensic scientists use the laws of maths, physics and biology to interpret blood patterns at crime scenes. They then worked to recreate some of those patterns themselves using paint.

Year 6 Shakespeare Week

Last week, Year 6 had an enjoyable time as they prepared for a performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The pupils have had the opportunity to explore a range of skills such as improvisation, characterisation and movement as they rehearsed with Stage Door Theatre Company. They have also gained a much deeper understanding of the play and its context. On top of this, the pupils have been able to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of Shakespeare, his works and the language used.

The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the week and have had the opportunity to develop their confidence and understanding of the play, whilst also having lots of fun. They have worked hard and have put together a fantastic performance that was enjoyed by staff, pupils and parents alike.
