Physicists Visit CERN in Geneva

Just before half term four of our sixth form Physicists enjoyed a memorable trip to the home of the largest science experiment in the world – CERN! Along with other pupils from the Liverpool Ogden Trust Partnership we were treated to guided tours of many of the departments, met a number of different scientists working on cutting edge research, and saw some of the sights of Geneva. The highlight of the trip had to be going 100m underground to view the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector. The trip gave a wonderful insight into the exciting world of physics and the importance of collaboration within the scientific world, it also produced a number of amazing facts. For example did you know that if all of the cables used in CERN were placed end to end then they would reach the Sun and back over 5 times!!
